Novel Polymer-Redox-Flow-Batteries

Stationary energy storage systems employing the modern redox-flow-battery (RFB) technology are a sustainable and cost-effective way to cope with growing deployment of renewable energy sources as well as the development of smart grids.

JenaBatteries develops a RFB system using a robust and cost-efficient membrane with an electrolyte chemistry significantly superior to conventional flow batteries. Organic materials, in particular polymers, replace toxic metals! As highly corrosive vanadium-based electrolytes are replaced with a “green” and easy-to-handle alternative (non-acidic, non-corrosive) our new class of RFBs can be utilized in numerous application areas.

Applications:

  • Storage of solar energy
  • Grid-scale energy storage
  • Scalable batteries for stationary applications (from houses to industrial plants)
  • Load leveling and peak-shifting
  • Emergency power supply

How does it work?

Like metal ions our polymers can store electric energy by taking up/releasing electrons. Unlike conventional batteries the P-RFB does not use solid battery cells of a predefined size but a scalable system consisting of two components: Reservoir tanks (I) and an electrochemical cell (II). The energy storage polymer developed by JenaBatteries is dissolved in a water-based electrolyte, which is stored in the reservoir tanks. By varying the size of the tank the capacity of the battery can easily be tailored to individual needs. The tanks are connected to an electrochemical cell that charges/discharges the polymer with electric energy. Varying the size of the electrochemical cell adjusts the power output of the battery. By this means customized, yet extendible, energy storage solutions are created that fit the needs of small homes as well as industrial applications.
